Simple concept, go to youtube, find a video game song you like, and post a link to it here. I'm something of a connoisseur of video game music yet I'm still occasionally surprised at the cool remixes and remastered versions people can find.
I'll post a couple of my favorites to start things off. There are two different versions of this song I really like, both done by the Distant Worlds group. This is the first version which includes a rock group mixed in with the orchestra. The Kefka theme part is a little weak IMO, but the final part of that fourth movement is so great with the guitar it makes up for it. The second version is without the rock group and appeared on the Distant Worlds Returning Home album and it's strong throughout but not quite a strong at the end as this version here. People who think they're good at the guitar and can play great final fantasy remixes can pretty much watch and learn from this guy. He absolutely tears it up on the Gilgamesh theme from Final Fantasy 5. Distant Worlds has done an orchestrated version of this song, Nobuo Uematsu himself has a band by the name of Black Mages that covers this song, and neither groups can touch this guy. Every single cover of his I've heard is equally as good too. OK last one I'll post for now. I loved Actraiser as a kid on my SNES, it was one of the best SNES games I've ever played (along with FFIV, FFVI & Super Metroid) and I've always loved the Birth of a People song, Fillmore however seemed like generic action video game music to me, until I heard this. This version, performed by a symphony orchestra completely changed my opinion of the song. Now it's one of my favorite video game songs I've ever heard. Anyways, I can't wait to see what other people will post. If you CAN (you don't have to) try and find remixed/reorchestrated versions of the OST version that you think improve the song. Sometimes the original is the best, but I find that with video game music that's only rarely the case. |

Heh I'm not sure Guitar Hero really qualifies. :P I mean, technically it's a video game so music played on it could be argued to be video game music, but I'm speaking more specifically of music written exclusively for a video game.
Here's another This is a pretty new one I've found. The concert is new so I guess that makes sense, but still, as much as I love the Gerudo Valley song played by a symphony orchestra, I'm still dying to hear an authentic Mexican Mariachi band play this song. It'd be the best version of all. At least, that's what I think. |

That Skyrim video is great!
Listening to the Skyrim song always reminds me of two other songs I have on a small playlist I have. Love Legend of Grimrock. By far the best indy game of 2012, well worth the $15. I've been in love with Dungeon Master & Chaos Strikes Back since it was released when I was 8 years old, and Grimrock brings that style of game to life again. And this song is pretty damned good too. I really wouldn't have expected such a small-time game to have such great production values all the way around. Sad song, if you turn the volume up to hear the piano well the Reapers will scare the piss out of you while they blow your eardrums out. Still, quite a good song. |

Since I have been playing some Final Fantasy lately, I´ll share some songs from those games:
Eyes on me - Final Fantasy VIII theme Otherworld - Final Fantasy X And if you didn´t get goosebumps once that music hit, you never encountered the One Winged Angel....

Those are three of the very best original soundtrack versions of any video game song I've heard. I think I still like Skyrim's original opening theme better, but it's pretty rare than any final fantasy song is better in it's original form than after being re-orchestrated.
To Zanarkand was one such song on that list as well, until I heard this: Until I had played Mass Effect 2, I was a firm believer that this was the main theme to the best RPG to date. I loved Dragon Age: Origins to death. |
