From Jim Ross Website.................

Quote I’ve seen a lot of wrestlers (especially old-school ones) stop before stepping through the rope and "wipe" their boots on the ring apron. I have seen Steven Regal and other heels do it as part of a stalling routine but also saw Cody Rhodes do it before one of his matches.I have heard many explanations for this. One being it is a ritual like bowing to your opponant in martial arts. Another says it pays respect to your trainer or wrestlers that came before you. Finally Lance Storm said it’s because there is spilt beer and crap on the arena floors and you just get it off before entering. Do you have any insight on this?

Cleanliness and superstition primarily.

The reason given by Lance Storm makes sense. There's plenty of rowdy wrestling fans making a mess and so it's best to wipe your boots, so that you don't risk slipping and getting injured during the match. William Regal does it because of his character, thus playing up to the "regal" part. I've no idea why Cody does it and can't think of anyone else who does it (I don't tend to take notice of male ring entrances). Can anyone think of anymore people who do that?

I've heard it was for respect before. Regal is the only one I see that does it every single time. Although, I wouldn't mind hearing about where it all started.

regal does it because he's an asshole , but in most likley storm is the closes to the truth , i just figured they did it to make their soles not so slick... boy was that lame , i would have to say this is the first time ive ever had this discussion about wrestling...i got a better question , why do some wrestlers choose to wear normal clothing while others still perfer to wrestle in what appeers to be their underwear , now thats lame , they should do away with those , it's like watching old basketball films and wondering how could the comfortably play in those shorts

William Regal does it because it is Britisah tradition to keep the ring clean, Lance Storm obviously because of the Hart family, and my opinion about Cody Rhodes is he does it because his dad was a great wrestler back in the day, and he is showing respet to that generation

Britsrule is correct, its an old school thing about respecting the ring and keeping it clean, from the back to the ring can get rather dirty on the floors & stuff so old school is to wipe your feet before you go into the ring. nothing to do with regals character admin, sorry mate

Going by Britsrule's statement, you're absolutely right - Regal's entire character is a stereotype of British tradition.

Just have to bump this thread, basically just to share what my trainer told me when I first wanted to step into the ring without wiping my boots first:

Kid, just imagine wrestling on a fair, in the middle of nowhere, there´s beer, trash and in worst case, vomit and shit on the floor. You go through that, don´t wipe your feet and then get DDT´d onto the canvas you stained with all that. You want that? Didn´t think so. Wipe.

Bump.

Totally feel this is a respect thing. Tho, it very well could be true that some guys do it to get shit off of their boots. I mean, i don't see how the canvas would clean beer off of a boot but i can see someone honoring the ring and trying not to track shit in.

I've seen it done alot and like i said, I've always seen it as a sign of respect. I didn't think about it like paying respects to your trainer or it being like a bow in karate but those are 2 things i think could be the truth behind why its done. Keeping the traditions of the old school alive in one way or another. I wonder how far back this 'wiping the feet off' thing goes?

Some guys seem like they do it as part of their gimmick and i can understand a snobby guy thinking its his ring and he'll wipe his feet after walking on peasant turf. Not necessarily in that instance but you get what i mean.

RESPECT!
** Your Welcome **

Cody Rhodes seems to do this alot - not sure if it is part of a respect thing or just his gimmick
